More often that not, that experience tended to be a guided tour through a combination shooting gallery and theme park, with developers trying to evoke the same emotions in much the same ways, at times with the same battles. "Games are often inspired by really iconic films, and after Saving Private Ryan, I think a lot of people were really struck by how powerful that film was in its portrayal of WWII," van Lierop said, "and a lot of game developers thought, 'Let's make a game that recreates some of that experience.'" The genre has been largely dormant since, but CI Games is looking to bring it back next year with Enemy Front.Īlthough it was originally announced in 2011, Enemy Front hasn't been heard from in almost a year. The big franchises that spawned much of the WWII FPS craze-Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield-all decided they'd had enough of The Big One and moved to more modern settings. Overall, if found in the bargain bins, Enemy Front isn't a bad pick, but it doesn't aim higher than mediocrity.Sometime in the last decade or so, "World War II first-person shooter" moved from being a legitimate selling point to cause for derision. Finally, the main character isn't believable, mainly because of poor voice acting, which gets in the way of identifying with him. Secondly, although it's admirable that the developer opted for a less linear design, the levels are generic, and the campaign and mission objectives are uninteresting. This is simply unacceptable for a first-person war game. The first issue is a technical one: The screen tends to freeze occasionally, especially when there's a lot of action going on at the same time.
That can't be said for every game in this genre, which tend to be very scripted.īut Enemy Front simply doesn't stack up against many other first-person shooters today. Players even have flexibility when it comes to completing their missions, relying on methods such as frontal assaults or stealth to accomplish tasks. Which Side of History?
